Dr. Hazel Carney refers to herself as "one of the oldest living cat-only doctors left in captivity," because for more than 30 years now she has treated only cats for both behavioral and medical problems.

She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1981 from Colorado State University. She also holds a Master's degree in Physiology and Biophysics. In 1982, Dr. Carney opened the thirteenth registered cat-only practice in the U.S., where she served as senior clinician for thirteen years.

In 1986, she became an adjunct professor of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and a founding member of Louisiana Veterinary Nuclear Medicine group, which provides I-131 (radioactive iodine) therapy to cats in Louisiana and Mississippi. Dr. Carney has been treating hyperthyroidism in cats with I-131 for more than 25 years.

Dr. Carney is a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) and is a specialist in Canine and Feline Clinical Practice.

In 1995, Dr. Carney moved to Idaho, joining WestVet's predecessor clinic in 1998. She is a co-author of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) "Feline Behavior Guidelines," "Feline Friendly Handling Guidelines," "Feline Friendly Nursing Care Guidelines" and the upcoming "Guidelines for Meeting the Environmental Needs of the Cat."

She has published numerous articles in textbooks and feline medicine journals as well as in magazines geared toward cat owners. In addition, she shares her findings and expertise through national conferences where she is a featured speaker for numerous Continuing Education conferences for regional veterinarians; most recently in September 2012 when she spoke for the Southwestern Veterinary Symposium in Dallas, TX.
