Susan Boydstun Susan Boydstun has maintained ponds in the Boise area since the mid-1980s. She is affiliated with the Idaho Water Garden and Koi Society (www.iwgks.org), the Pacific Northwest Koi Association, the Association of Koi Clubs of America, and the Koi Organization International.

Sue is a certified Koi health advisor, certification awarded upon completion of a two year or more course of study on all aspects of the Koi hobby.

Sue recently retired as a certified teacher for the state of Idaho. She is certified to teach various subjects including biology and life sciences, although her experience was primarily as an elementary physical education teacher. Sue holds both a bachelors and masters degree and has completed doctoral studies at the University of California Berkeley. In addition, she has completed course work at the University Of Edinburgh, Scotland, the University of Canberra, Australia and Hosei University, Tokyo.

Currently, Sue has three ponds and two holding/quarantine tanks for fish; her original pond is 700 gallons but as her original fish grew, she expanded to a 12,000 gallon pond that currently holds 27 Koi ranging in size from 14" to 28" in length. Her oldest Koi is 39 years old.

Sue continues to expand her knowledge of pond building, Koi and their habits; next to her large pond is a 400-gallon round stock tank she uses for plants and holding fish. Sue built this smaller pond to determine what a basic pond would cost (minus landscaping). The tank, homemade filter, and circulating pump came in under $700! She says this would make a great beginner's pond -- but be forewarned, ponds have a tendency to grow.
